Why collecting digital art is worthwhile right now!
Art as an investment is not only resistant to crises, art is always also a beautiful collectible – a total loss, as in other investment markets, is out of the question.
As an art market expert, I can tell you that so called blue-chip art is in high demand right now, like always especially in times of crisis. Auction houses like Sotheby’s, Christie’s or Ketterer Kunst achieved record prices in December 2022, analogous to the financial crisis in 2008.
Thought leaders with diversified investment strategies are currently betting on art. And those who have the knowledge, the financial means and the access, know that you can multiply your assets over the years.
At the same time, works by the artists, who are highly endowed today were hardly worth anything at the time they were created. At the end of the 19th century, impressionist works by Claude Monet, Edgar Degas or Pierre-Auguste Renoir arose. „Impressionist“ was initially a swear word for a new form of expression in art that could not be classified in the traditional context. It was followed by works by Vincent van Gogh or Paul Gauguin – works that were excluded from popular exhibitions at the time and mostly only bought by entrepreneurs who had the guts to invest in zeitgeist art. Today they are worth up to the 3-digit million range.
INVESTMENT STRATEGY
But even with a small budget, great things can be achieved if the following criteria are adhered to:
1) Art has to be pleasing first and foremost and should only be bought if if there is going on a noticeable personal dialogue.
2) Prices develop based on a concept, an idea, an own artistic handwriting, the quality of a work – also within an oeuvre, the demand and the presence in the art market.
3) When comparability is lacking due to new modes of expression, it helps to ask experts who observe the market and keep historical relevance in mind.
If you want to invest in the art of today on a small budget, you should be careful to always recognize the new. Works by artists who are the first to develop a new visual language and use it in combination with new technologies are always worth to have.
This is proven by all the works hanging in museums today, they all have to do with innovation – be it new technologies or new world views.
Digital art has been around since the 1960s: since the first computer was turned on. But for a very long time, digital art was underestimated, excluded from the art market. Artists presented themselves at festivals or biennials, only a few galleries specialized in the topic of digital art with a lot of perseverance. The NFT hype has ignited the fire. Both demand and prices are on the rise. Works by already established artists can be find in the 5 to 6 digit range. But if you are a little braver, you can also acquire digital art in the 3 to 4-digit range.
INVESTMENT ADVICE
Computer art, animations, net.art, software art, post-internet art, VR, AR and the next major topic, AI art, are worthwhile investments with great future potential. A number of relevant museum exhibitions are currently under construction. And the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) announced in the middle of the crisis year 2022 that it will invest US$ 70m in the expansion of digital developments and NFTs. The museum knows why.
